Aug 10: Prisoners’ Justice Day 2020

To mark Prisoners’ Justice Day, August 10, Books Beyond Bars will hold a panel discussion featuring people who have experienced incarceration.

Date and time: August 10, 2020; 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Location: Corner of Spring Garden Rd. and Grafton St., in front of the Old Spring Garden Library

*** COVID-19 is still here so we ask all participants to bring a mask and respect all gathering guidelines set up by the municipal government***

Books Beyond Bars operates with the belief that the prison system is fundamentally flawed. Sending women to prison does not support people in dealing with the issues that led to their incarceration: poverty, abuse, racism, addiction, etc. We visit the women’s prisons in Nova Scotia to break down barriers between women who are caught in an unjust system and those of us on the outside involved with prison justice issues.

Join us on August 10th outside of the courthouse to discuss with ex-prisoners and academics what it’s like inside and where the system fails in its rehabilitation. A panel of people with lived experience will also be present to answer questions and discuss how they have interacted with the prison system and how we can re-imagine a new way of rehabilitation and restorative justice approach.

Come and stand with Books Beyond Bars and learn about the history of Prisoner Justice Day and how you can help fight against a capitalist prison system.
