Book and gift card donations

Due to limited space, we are only accepting donations of books that are requested by the women we visit at the Burnside prison (check our most recent blog post for the newest requests), or books that fall into these categories:

  • blank journals and sketchbooks (no spiral ring binding)
  • origami paper
  • new or like-new children’s books for our Read-Aloud program: some favourites are Dr. Seuss, nursery rhymes and other kids classics
  • pre-paid envelopes from Canada Post for mailing books for the Read-Aloud program
  • true stories of drug abuse and recovery, alcoholism, mental health/institutionalization, eating disorders, abuse recovery
  • self-help (recent, not 60s/70s paperbacks)
  • astrology
  • dream dictionaries
  • poetry anthologies, poetry books
  • writing, being a writer
  • pregnancy and childbirth
  • women’s health
  • black Nova Scotia history
  • Native history / culture / stories
  • law books (not academic)
  • prisoner’s stories / journals / biographies
  • true crime
  • large print books
  • literacy readers or workbooks

Donations of gift cards to places where we can buy books are also appreciated.

Drop-off locations

Donations can be dropped off at Venus Envy (1598 Barrington St.), Alteregos Cafe (2193 Gottingen St.) or The Loaded Ladle (6136 University Ave, Room B24).

Donations by mail

Cheques made out to Books Beyond Bars, books and donations of gift cards to places where we can buy books can be sent to our mailing address.

Get t-shirts, magnets, zines and more!

We are fundraising to cover 1 year of expenses. Support our Fundrazr campaign claim great perks and help us cover the cost of rent for our library, supplies for our programming and outreach events such as Prisoners’ Justice Day.

Amazon wish list

Our Amazon wish list is regularly updated to reflect our most requested authors and items. Items can be dropped off at any of our drop-off locations listed above or shipped directly to our mailing address.

E-tranfers

Monetary donations can be made sending an e-transfer to booksbeyondbars@gmail.com. We are registered for auto-deposit, so no password is required.
